Despite the beauty of its neighbor Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is a worthy trekker’s paradise. This massive volcano towers over 3,000 meters above Arusha City, which lies at the foothills on its south side. The mountain undergone a violent explosion in the past around 2 million years ago, and in its wake the explosion left towering cliffs in a gaping U shaped ridge facing east towards Kilimanjaro. The crater stands today in a protected oval of sorts, thousands of feet below the summit rocks. The craggy top lies at the western most point of the summit ridge and extends boldly into the sky at 4566 meters (14,979 feet). From the top, you can have the fascinating view of Kilimanjaro from the highest point possible…. Perhaps there is no better vantage point to look at Africa’s tallest mountain, approximately 80 km to the northeast.
What makes Mt. Meru truly special is animals viewing chance on foot, and explore the Meru Crater. Just 126km south west of Arusha close to Lake Manyara National Park is Mto wa Mbu village. The name in English means Mosquito River from Swahili language. This is known as the oldest building on the Zanzibar archipelago and it is among the most commonly visited tourist sites in stone Town.
